Gujarat packs an unusual range into one state: a salt desert, the only wild lions in Asia, four UNESCO sites, 1,600 km of coastline and a hill station. Here is what actually earns a place on a first itinerary.
1. White Rann of Kutch
A horizon-to-horizon salt flat near Dhordo. Best under a full moon between November and February, when Rann Utsav is running.
2. Gir National Park
The last wild population of Asiatic lions. Safaris run from Sasan Gir; the park closes from mid-June to mid-October.
3. Statue of Unity, Kevadia
At 182 metres, the tallest statue in the world. The viewing gallery at 153 m looks out over the Sardar Sarovar dam.
4. Somnath Temple
The first Jyotirlinga, rebuilt on the Arabian Sea shore. The evening sound-and-light show is genuinely good.
5. Dwarka
Char Dham pilgrimage town with the Dwarkadhish temple and Bet Dwarka island.
6. Rani ki Vav, Patan
A UNESCO stepwell with over 500 principal sculptures — the one on the ₹100 note.
7. Modhera Sun Temple
11th-century Solanki sun temple with a stepped tank that is at its best in early morning light.
8. Dholavira
Harappan city on Khadir island, UNESCO-listed in 2021, with a water-management system 4,500 years ahead of its time.
9. Champaner-Pavagadh
A ruined 15th-century capital wrapped around a hilltop Mahakali temple.

11. Saputara
Gujarat's only hill station, best in and just after the monsoon.

How long do you need?
A focused trip works better than a sweeping one. Seven days covers either Saurashtra (Dwarka–Somnath–Gir–Diu) or Kutch plus north Gujarat heritage — not both. Ten to twelve days covers the state properly.
Best season
October to March, without much argument. April and May cross 42°C inland. The monsoon is beautiful in the Dangs and along the Narmada, and miserable everywhere else.
